The Lee Kong Chian Graduate Scholarships ("Scholarships") were established from donations received from the Lee Foundation and are the University's most prestigious scholarship awards for graduate students.

The selection of candidates will take place twice a year, in time for the start of the academic year in August and January. Up to 5 new Scholarships will be given each year. Not all Scholarships will be awarded unless there are candidates of sufficient merit.

The Scholarships are open to all nationalities who have graduated with an undergraduate degree with first class or second-upper (or equivalent). They must be an incoming new PhD student not currently matriculated. At the time of award of the Scholarship, the candidate must have been offered admission as a candidate for a full-time higher degree by research at NUS and students must be eligible for MOE subsidy*

Award Amount

  • A monthly stipend of S$3,5001;
  • Tuition, examination fees and other approved fees at NUS;
  • An annual book allowance of S$500;
  • A one-off air travel one-off air travel allowance of S$3,000 (for students admitted from Semester 2, AY2015/2016); and
  • A one-off laptop allowance of S$1,500.

    1Monthly stipend of this amount takes effect from 1 August 2015. In addition, Central Provident Fund (CPF) contributions shall be provided to Singapore Citizens at a rate pegged to the prevailing employer's contribution rate set by CPF, on top of the monthly stipend received.

Award Period
The award is tenable for 1 year in the first instance; but subject to the scholar's satisfactory progress, it may be renewed annually. The maximum period of award is 4 years.

No bond is required.

Application Procedure
Upon receiving the call for nominations, department shall evaluate and nominate suitable candidates for this scholarship. 

Notification of Award
Successful candidates will be informed of the outcome of their applications sometime in May (for August intake).

Terms and Conditions
