Other Opportunities

There are several schemes in the university for students to augment their monthly income. These schemes are not guaranteed. The availability of these opportunities depends on the individual student's initiative, capabilities, enthusiasm to learn and willingness to work hard. In general, the university has determined that the total income from scholarships and the various schemes should not exceed $3100 per month. These schemes are explained below.

1. Graduate Student Researchers: This scheme allows graduate research students to work as part-time research assistants to faculty members anywhere in the university for a maximum of ten (10) hours per week. The remuneration rate is about $12 to $15 per hour at the moment.

2. Teaching Opportunities: Students who have defended their thesis proposal may be appointed as part-time tutors by their respective departments. The remuneration ranges from $30 to $60 per teaching hour for research scholars. For students not receiving research scholarships, the remuneration can be either within the same range per teaching hour as research scholars or $1,200 per month. The scheme is meant to develop the pedagogical skills of our students. Appointment and opportunity vary depending on departmental requirements, and student capabilities and initiative.

3. Post-Qualifying Examination Top-Up: Students who pass their qualifying examination after the coursework receive an additional $500 per month for at least one year.

4. Part-Time Employment: After a student has defended his / her thesis proposal, the thesis committee and the program office may allow the student to take up part-time employment outside the campus while finishing the dissertation. The decision is at the discretion of the committee and the program office, and depends on the student's record.

5. Research Resources: Students will be supported to the extent possible by their advisors and committee members in conducting their research. There are other resources such as the Singapore Millennium Foundation awards, Raffles award that are publicized and activated from time to time. These awards and scholarships help students with resources to conduct their research.
