About Us

Welcome to the HRM Unit's website. As a teaching unit which offers courses in human relations management and various applied management subjects to undergraduates from other faculties in NUS, we may be seen to play a role similar to that of an 'ambassador-at-large' of the School.

As undergraduates, you will soon transit into a working world that is often marked by uncertainty, change and ambivalences. Our objective is to develop management-related courses that are current and relevant, and to help you engage with some of the contradictions and challenges that will confront you at work.

Happy browsing!

Prof Richard ARVEY

Head, Department of Management & Organisation (and HRM)

History

Following the progress report of the National Productivity Council -Subcommittee on Education NPC-SCOE) in 1982, it was recommended that it was essential to develop among graduates of educational institutes an awareness of and the ability to practise good human relations and teamwork in their places of employment. The formation of the Unit was also based on a letter from the ex-Prime Minister's office dated 17 Jan '83, in which the idea of a Human Resource Management (HRM) Unit was conceived in 1983. In that letter, it was suggested that all students in the university be taught an HRM course which would include:

  • concepts of productivity & how it is related to the economy, company and individual;
  • benefits of company welfarism;
  • importance of non-adversarial labour-management relationships in enhancing productivity and importance of people-centred management system.

Structure

The unit is responsible for teaching HRM and other management-related courses to about 3,000 students a year. The HRM courses are designed specifically to suit the needs of different professional disciplines and they vary from 18-hours to 39-hours in length.

The Unit has full-time and part-time staff who are human resource practitioners and trainers with at least a Masters degree. They are well-equipped to lend their years of industry experience to help students make the transition to the workplace.
